Democrat-Gazette wins 1st for editorial writing

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette won first place in editorial writing in the 79th National Headliner Awards.

Founded by the Press Club of Atlantic City in 1934, the National Headliner Awards program is one of the oldest annual journalism contests.

The winning entries were written by the newspaper’s editorial editor, Paul Greenberg, and editorial writer David Barham.

Submissions included “A Drunkard’s Dream,” which was about the death of Levon Helm; “Small Wins Count,” which addressed the proposed use of debit cards to buy state-lottery tickets; “End of the Voyage,” which focused on the death of Neil Armstrong; “Now it’s the I-word,” a 1984/George Orwell-style editorial about using the term“illegal immigrant;” and “The Real Losers,” a post-election review of political pundits and their faulty predictions.

Barham, on learning of the award, said: “It’s easy to write in this environment, in this office. They give you the keys and tell you to punch it, but your editors don’t allow you to wreck. It’s a fun job.”

The other entries that won in this year’s Headliner Awards came from the El Paso Times, which placed second, and the Newsday editorial board, which came in third.
