HELPFUL HINTS

DEAR HELOISE: For the reader whose dog escaped when the gate was left open by a lawn service, she should put up signs that say “Keep Gate Closed” on the gate. From personal experience, this is one of the greatest responsibilities of a pet owner: keeping the pet safe! You may even want to put locks on all gates. Keep the key in your possession. It takes only one road-crossing to cause the loss or death of your pet.

DEAR HELOISE: I enjoy cooking and like to try new recipes. One thing that was annoying to me was trying to remove a garlic clove when the dish was done. Now, before I add the clove to a sauce or dish, I stick a toothpick through it. When the dish is done, I can easily remove it.

DEAR HELOISE: Whenever I purchase a product that comes with a manual, I check online to see if a digital version is available. I created a “Product Manual” folder on my computer, and I save the files there. To date, I have more than 250 manuals, for everything from backpacks to thermostats, all in one convenient place.

DEAR HELOISE: After once misplacing a bill, I now take my checkbook with me to the post office and pay the bills that came without taking them home. They go right into the mail slot.

DEAR HELOISE: My wife came up with a decorating strategy covering the various holidays throughout the year. She and our son decorate almost every room in our home according to the season - Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. To expedite the process, she had me photograph each area that was decorated. When the next season comes around, all she has to do is open the cartons and look at the photos. Saves a lot of time and hassle.

DEAR READERS: After opening a container of cottage cheese, store it in the refrigerator on a low shelf. After spooning out the amount you need, smooth the surface to cut down on liquid formation and possible separation. Or try this Heloise hint: Store the cottage cheese upside down with the lid on tight, on a plate. This makes it last longer because it creates a seal.
