Theft of chicken, other items lands two men in jail

Two men are in custody after reportedly stealing various items from a Wal-Mart in White County on Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities were called to a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Searcy in reference to two white males stealing a bucket of fried chicken, an electric razor and four two-way radios, according to a news release from the Searcy Police Department.

Jerry Hemmert, 24, and Curtis Malone, 26, both fled on foot when authorities arrived, the release states. Malone was later apprehended after officers found him hiding under trash bags in a dumpster behind a nearby Dollar Tree. Hemmert was caught near the northbound entrance to Highway 67/167 off Race Street. Hemmert was already wanted by police for failure to appear, according to the release.

Both men were booked into the White County jail in lieu of $475 bond and charged with fleeing. Theft of property charges are also pending, according to the release.
