Ft. Smith man who survived gunshot charged with murder

FORT SMITH — Fort Smith police have charged a man with capital murder for a slaying in June during which the man charged survived a gunshot wound to the head.

Police on Monday charged Michael Ray Underwood with capital murder for death of his ex-wife's father, Michael Shook.

Fort Smith police said Underwood had been treated at hospitals in Little Rock and Fort Smith. Authorities lodged the capital murder charge on Monday after he was released from treatment.

On June 13, a patrol officer checked the ex-wife's home at her request and saw a glass door was broken. Inside, Underwood was in a chair and unresponsive, bleeding from a head wound. A pistol was between his legs. In another room, officers found Shook's body.

Underwood is in the Sebastian County Jail without bond.
