Gov. Mike Beebe endorsed former congressman Mike Ross on Saturday as the best man for Arkansas's highest elected office.

Ross, a former U.S. representative for Arkansas’ 4th Congressional District, is running as the sole democrat for the governor's race in 2014.

His opponents are former U.S. Rep. Asa Hutchinson, Little Rock businessman Curtis Coleman and state Rep. Debra Hobbs, who all are vying for the Republican nomination.

On the Capitol's steps in front of Ross's supporters, Beebe highlighted Ross's commitment to Arkansas residents, education, jobs and bipartisanship.

"If we're going to prioritize education and economic development," he said. "If we're going to understand our obligation to take care of those less fortunate than ourselves, if we're going to understand that we're going to do this together across party lines, then [Ross] is the man that knows how to get that done."

Beebe cannot run for re-election, because he is term-limited.
