PARAGOULD — Greene County officials say vandals knocked over and broke 42 headstones that were more than a century old.
Buford Williams, caretaker of the Gainesville Cemetery, said vandals had struck previously, but that the damage in the past week was particularly bad. Williams said the markers would have to be repaired, because they "can't just leave them like that."
Sheriff's Capt. Patrick Lenderman said most of the grave markers pulled out of the ground or broken appeared to be from the 1800s.
The Gainesville community was the Greene County seat from 1840-1884. The town was destroyed by fire in 1892.
Williams said he has asked sheriff's deputies to increase patrols near the cemetery.
