Ricin suspect faces competency hearing

A woman accused of threatening President Barack Obama and others is set to appear in federal court in Texarkana on Wednesday morning to determine whether she is competent to stand trial.

Shannon Richardson, 35, is charged with one count of mailing a threatening letter to the president and two counts of mailing threatening communications. The competency hearing will coincide with her formal arraignment on the charges.

She was arrested June 7 by federal agents who have accused her of mailing three letters containing ricin, a poison, to the president; New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; and Mark Glaze, the director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a gun-control advocacy group that lists Bloomberg as its co-chairman.
