Much of southern Arkansas saw worsening drought conditions in the last week, officials said Thursday.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor has nearly 20 percent of the state in a severe drought, up from just 4.38 percent a week earlier. The weekly report reflects conditions through Tuesday.
A week ago, two small pockets of severe drought were present in south Arkansas. In the latest report, all or part of more than a dozen counties are in the severe category, which is the third-worst classification, behind extreme and exceptional droughts.
No parts of Arkansas are currently under those droughts.
The latest conditions are an improvement from this time last year, when nearly 75 percent of the state was under at least an extreme drought and more than 45 percent was under an exceptional drought.
