A driver and passenger died Wednesday after a minivan ran off the road and hit a tree in Pope County, authorities said.

It happened about 3:10 p.m. as 75-year-old Dover resident Ronald V. Schreiber was driving a 2001 Toyota Sienna east on Walnut Valley Road, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Police say the SIenna veered off the road in a curve about a half mile west of Arkansas 7 North and then hit a tree.

Schreiber died at the scene. A passenger, identified as 73-year-old Glenda K. Schreiber, was taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock, where she died shortly after 8:45 p.m., police said.

Conditions at the time were described as clear and dry.

The deaths brought the number of people killed in traffic accidents in Arkansas to 444 so far this year, according to preliminary statistics.
