Dr. LARRY M. HENDERSON, age 65, of Sherwood died December 2, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. He was born Dec. 6th, 1947 to P.W. and Eunice Henderson of England, Ark. Larry chose to write his own obituary as follows.

To my family and friends: I chose to write my final thoughts to my loved ones. This should in no way convey any feelingsof self-importance or ego on my part, it is just a final goodbye to all of my family and dear friends.

First and foremost in my life is my family with my living and loving God as head of my family. We should always give full creditfor our blessings to our personal savior Jesus Christ.

I practiced dentistry in Little Rock and Sherwood for 32 years, from 1976 until my retirement in 2008. I was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association, Arkansas Dental Association, Central District Association and the Pulaski County Dental Association. During that time I met many kind and wonderful people that I considered to be my patients and friends.

I attended Henderson State in 1965 and transferred to Little Rock University. In 1970 I received my B.S. degree in biology and chemistry from Little Rock University, in 1972 I received my M.S. degree in zoology from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and in 1976 I was granted my Doctorate of Dentistry from the University of Louisville. After graduation in 1976 I moved back to Arkansas and began practicing Dentistry with Drs. John Butler and Jim Burleson in Little Rock, later moving in 1977 to Sherwood to go into private practice.

My father P.W. Henderson, mother Eunice, brothers William Pat and Lindsey Henderson all predeceased me. My surviving family members are my beloved wife, Vickie of Sherwood, daughter Kimberly McAndrew, and granddaughter, Scout of Northridge, California, my son, Michael Patrick Henderson, his wife, Shellie and granddaughters, Savannah Henderson and Sheridan Arnold of Sherwood.Stepsons, Matthew Daniel and Michael Daniel, and grandson, Gunner and granddaughter, Madison Daniel all of Sherwood. Mother-in-law, Mrs. Jo Raney, brother-in-law, Paul Raney and nephew-in-law, Sheldon Raney, all of Little Rock. Mrs. Francine Smith, loving mother-in-law, of West Memphis, who helped me through some very trying times in my life.

As a child I attended Caney Creek Baptist Church in Pettus, Arkansas and later was baptized into the Landmark Baptist Church of England, Arkansas. In 1995 I began Bible studies with Dr. Arnold Murry of Shepherds Chapel in Gravette, Arkansas.

I would like to request that in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The dedicated doctors and nurses saved my granddaughter Savannah’s life. There is no doubt that if we had not had A.C.H., she would not have survived her injuries.

Through my long battle with cancer I owe a great deal of thanks to Drs. Tony Bucolo and Joe Beck II and their wonderful staffs. A special thanks goes out to all of the nurses at the St. Vincent Oncology Infusion and 7th floor nursing staff.

This was a long and hard journey that we must all take and I pray to God that you all get your own special group of caring nurses and doctors to help you on your journey.

I have to express how special and wonderful my wife Vickie has been to me and all of our family during these many years of struggle. We all look forward to an eternity together with our Lord and savior in heaven. In conclusion all my best wishes and love to my patients and friends, and with the grace of God, we will be together again.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 6, 2013 at 10 a.m. with a memorial service to follow at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home, 7724 Landers Road, North Little Rock, Arkansas 72117. (501) 835-3515.

HOUSTON - James Virgil Waggoner, loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, philanthropist and businessman, passed away Wednesday, the 27th of November 2013. He was born on the 29th of October 1927 in Judsonia, Arkansas.

He was a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University where he received with honors a degree in Chemistry and Math. While attending Ouachita, he met and married the love of his life, June Howell. He went on to receive a master’s degree from the University of Texas also in Chemistry and Math.

Upon graduation, he accepted an offer to go to work for Monsanto Chemical Company in Texas City, Texas where he started his storied career. He rose to the position of Group Vice-President. He resigned from Monsanto in St. Louis, Missouri to become the President of El Paso Products Company located in Odessa, Texas. In 1983, he relocated to Houston, Texas where he became a consultant to the Petrochemical industry. In 1985, he with a group of investors along with the help of his good friend Gordon Cain formed Sterling Chemicals, Inc. Through his leadership and direction he successfully took the company public on the New York stock exchange as a fortune 500 company. Sterling became a legendary model in business with an “everyone winning philosophy” through its profit sharing program.

After his retirement from Sterling, he initiated a number of business ventures with his son-in-law Kevin, and spent time with his numerous activities in investments, real estate and philanthropy. Virgil’s giving heart and philosophy led to major gifts such as a grant to establish a research center to study alcohol dependence at the University of Texas. The Waggoner’s have funded a bi-annual Speakers luncheon to bring about the awareness of Alcoholism at the Council on Alcohol and Drugs of Houston. This was done in memory of their son Jay who passed away at the age of 36.

Virgil was honored by numerous organizations; such as the Ronald McDonald house, the Star of Hope, the Museum of Natural Science, the Good Samaritan Foundation, Boys and Girls Country, the Women’s Home, Orbis International (the world’s only flying eye hospital), the Cancer League and Baylor’s Teen Health Clinic and many others.

Virgil was a life-time Director of the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo, a Man of Distinction for Baylor College of Medicine and a member of the Board of Visitors at M.D. Anderson. He was also selected as a Distinguished Alumnus at the University of Texas at Austin. Further, he was a member of many other industry and civic organizations.

Along with his successful business ventures, nothing was more important in his life than his family. He is survived by his loving wife, June, to whom he was married for 65 years. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Kevin Quisenberry. His three grandchildren, Katie Fleck, Blake Quisenberry, and Madeline Waggoner. He will also be remembered by several nephews, a niece and numerous other family members and close friends.

In summation of his life, Virgil believed that few, if any, are recognized for what they give. He often quoted Winston Churchill who said, “You make a living by what you earn, you make a life by what you give.”

The Waggoner family would like to extend a special thankyou to the wonderful staff at Autumn Leaves, a memory care residence. We were so blessed that Virgil was given such loving care and surrounded by people that went above and beyond, ensuring that his time there was as comfortable as possible.

Friends gathered with the family and shared memories to celebrate his life during a reception at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, followed by a memorial service.

In lieu of customary remembrances, donations in Virgil’s memory may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association Houston Southeast Chapter, 2242 W. Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas 77030.
