Cyclists participate in Bentonville race despite icy weather

Despite the icy conditions created from winter storms that swept the state this week, a bicycle race was held in Bentonville on Sunday morning.

The Boston Mountain Cyclists' Phat Tire Cyclocross bicycle race took place on a 0.8-mile course on the Slaughter Pen Trail System. Cyclocross involves both cycling and running while carrying a bike.

The race's course was initally set to be 1.2 miles, but was altered after the race's organizer Jason Evans, of Bentonville, said some sections were too tough to ride a bicycle.

About 20 people showed up at the course Sunday morning to participate in the race, which is about 25 percent of how many people had signed up, Evans said. Slick road conditions prevented race participants from Conway and Little Rock to travel to Bentonville.

A crowd of about 10 to 15 people waited at the finish line to cheer for cyclists, Evans said.

"Everybody loved it," he said. "They thought it was great, they liked racing in the snow and they thought it was cool."
