State police: Man shot himself following car chase

A man has died Sunday after police said he shot himself following a police car chase on Interstate 40 in northwest Arkansas.

The unidentified man was found shortly after 1 p.m. at the end of a pursuit that spanned two Arkansas counties, according to a state police statement.

Police said that about 12:50 p.m. in Franklin County, a state trooper spotted a vehicle that matched the description of a car that police believed an Alabama fugitive had been traveling in.

When police initiated a traffic stop, the vehicle pulled off to the highway's shoulder and a female driver ran from the car, according to the release. A man, who police said was hiding inside of the car, fled the scene and drove back onto I-40 westbound.

Police said they later found the suspect's vehicle traveling on I-40 westbound in Crawford County shortly after 1 p.m. and followed the car until the car came to a stop.

"Troopers who approached the car found the driver dead," the release states.

The unidentified woman has been taken into custody in Franklin County, according to police.

An investigation is ongoing, state police said. More information will be released as the investigation continues and next-of-kin are notified.
