Pedestrian killed in Fort Smith hit-and-run

Authorities say a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle that then left the scene Sunday in Fort Smith.

It happened about 4:30 a.m. at Towson Avenue and Boston Street, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Richard Charles Cox, 48, of Fort Smith was walking north on Towson when he was hit by an "unknown vehicle," the report said.

Conditions at the time were described as snowing and icy.

Police are still investigating what happened.

The death was the 447th fatality in a traffic accident in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
