House Republicans signal support for budget deal

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — House Republicans signaled support Wednesday for a budget deal worked out a day earlier, a plan narrowly drawn but promoted as a way to stabilize Congress’ erratic fiscal efforts, avert another government shutdown and mute some of the partisan rancor that has damaged Americans’ attitudes about their lawmakers.

“There’s a lot to like about it,” said one GOP congressman, John Fleming of Louisiana, as he emerged from a caucus meeting.

Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., said most Republicans would back the deal worked out by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Democratic Sen. Patty Murray and applauded by the White House.

The House plans to vote by week’s end before it adjourns for the year on Friday.

The hyper behavior of the House of Representatives nut faction has probably done more damage to the Republicans than to the country as a whole, if that be possible. On the other hand, a dollar figure cannot be pulled up any more than a political/psychological damage assessment can ever be accurately made. Net effect: Republicans may be so weakened during the next twenty years that the big spenders will get their way on just about everything. The cure: Well, maybe “rehabilitation” would be a better word. The Republicans could start by improving their image, by disavowing the nuts and extremists who are drawn to their party like flies to honey, by taking their image back from Fox News, from Rush Limbaugh and others who’ve hijacked the GOP, lock, stock and barrel. And it won’t be easy. The chasm between the “Republicans” and the fanatics is much wider than anyone right of center wants to believe—and the Democrats are indeed delighted.
