UAMS gets $1 million donation for breast center, cancer facility

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock is set to receive a sizable donation that will help in the construction of a new cancer treatment facility.

Local fundraiser Stuart Cobb is donating a $1 million gift to the hospital to use toward the completion of its new breast cancer center, according to a news release from UAMS.

Specifically, the money will go to construction and services for the center, which will be located on the third floor of the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, the release states. The new facility is expected to feature all-digital mammogram equipment, along with a full range of breast imaging, MRI, ultrasound and biopsy services.

The facility is also expected to house bone marrow biopsy equipment, CT scanners and "interventional" oncology services, among other things, according to the release. The current breast center will move from its current site in the UAMS Outpatient Center once construction on the new site is completed.

“Stuart Cobb has a longstanding and special connection to the cancer institute,” UAMS Chancellor Dr. Dan Rahn said in a statement. “Her generous donation will ensure that Arkansans have access to the most advanced facility for mammography and other essential outpatient cancer-related procedures for many years to come.”

Cobb served as a charter member of the Cancer Institute Auxilary and helped establish several fundraising projects for UAMS, including the cancer institute's gift shop, according to the release. Cobb also co-chaired the Cooks Tour fundraising event in 1998 and still serves as a auxiliary board member and volunteer on many UAMS-related projects.
