Marshals Museum board talks finances over coins

FORT SMITH — Board members for the planned U.S. Marshals Museum in Fort Smith say they want to help market commemorative coins that are to be struck to honor the Marshals Service.

Museum chief executive Jim Dunn said that almost all sales of commemorative coins are made through the U.S. Mint's marketing efforts. But, he said, the museum can help sales.

The Southwest Times Record reported that the museum is to get the first $5 million raised through sales of the coins.

The issue includes a $5 gold coin, a $1 silver coin and a half-dollar coin. Each comes with a surcharge.

Dunn said the museum can target likely buyers, such as readers of True West magazine. He said local banks could help promote the coins, as could the Retired U.S. Marshals Association.
