Rain, some sleet forecast for Friday in Arkansas

Arkansans should expect precipitation Friday that will manifest as cold rain in most of the state but potentially freezing rain and sleet in the northern counties, the National Weather Service said Thursday.

In "primarily the northern two or three rows of counties, precipitation could begin as freezing rain and sleet during the morning," weather service Warning Coordination Meteorologist John Robinson said in an email. "The same will be true in the Ouachita Mountains close to the Oklahoma border."

Some sleet could be mixed with the rain as far south as central Arkansas as the precipitation starts early Friday, Robinson said.

"The best bet is that any freezing rain in the north would turn to rain by midday or so," he said. But since freezing rain on an already-cold ground could cause problems, some winter weather advisories could come into effect, he added.

Rainfall totals should range from 1/2-inch to 1 inch in most places, Robinson said.
