Little Rock man killed in seven-vehicle wreck on I-40

A Little Rock man died Tuesday in a seven-vehicle wreck on Interstate 40 near Forrest City that started as traffic was stopped in a construction zone, authorities said.

It happened about 3:20 p.m. near mile marker 245, which is about two miles west of the Arkansas 38 exit toward Widener.

Authorities say a Peterbuilt truck was stopped for construction in the westbound lanes and a 2008 Subaru was stopped behind it when a 2007 Freightliner truck rear-ended the Subaru and pushed it into the Peterbuilt truck.

A 2007 Chevrolet then rear-ended the Freightliner, hit and went over the concrete barrier and then struck an eastbound vehicle, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Two more Freightliner trucks then hit the westbound vehicles, police said.

The Chevrolet driver, identified as 37-year-old Robert N. Duranth of Little Rock, died from unspecified injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says work is under way to reconstruct eight miles of interstate in the Forrest City area. It's expected to be complete by the middle of 2014.

The fatality is the 456th death in a traffic accident in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
