DONALD L. ALLEN, 74, of Little Rock, died December 17, 2013. Born June 3, 1939 in Monticello, Ark., he was the son of Bishop Ray and Carmen Calhoun Allen. He retired as a truck driver after 37 years of service, but enjoyed watching semi-tractor trailer trucks all his life. He also enjoyed football, Arkansas Razorbacks, Dallas Cowboys, LA Lakers, and Los Angeles Dodgers, hunting, tinkering with cars and classic car shows.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Dale Dewayne Allen and Michael Allen; and four brothers.

Survivors are his wife of 34 years, Jeanell Bray Allen; three sons, Ron Bowen of Little Rock, Tracy Allen (Pam) of Little Rock, Dewayne Bowen of Florida and April Wasson of Texas; a brother, Ronald Allen of Little Rock and a sister, Mary Slaughter of Monticello, Ark.; five grandchildren including special granddaughter, Autumn Bowen.

FLORENE CRITTENDEN, 88, of North Little Rock, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Cornerstone Hospital in Jacksonville, Ark. She was born March 3, 1925 to Johnny Ready and Albert Holland Ready in Galloway, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husbands, Roger D. Wood and Lewis Crittenden, Jr. Florene is survived by a son, Roger L. Wood; daughters, Brenda J. Wood-Green, and Melba G. Wood; grandsons, Roger C. Wood, Julian N. Wood, and Kevin C. Williams; great-grandson, Sandoval E. Wood; and stepdaughter, Kay F. Wood-Martin.

DON “SMURF” EICHLER, 82, of North Little Rock, Ark., diedDecember 14, 2013 he was born July 19, 1931 preceded in death by his mother and father Gene and Fritz Eichler. He is survived by his wife Mary “Bobbi” Eichler; four daughtersDonna Rios, Susan Eichler, Lydia Farnam, and Mary Jo Zakrzewski; four grandchildren Joe Rios, Mandy Rios, Travis Barton and Max Zakrzewski; and six great-grandchildren Kiley Barton, Theara and Abby Riley, Remington Gisclair and Chloe and Jaycee Farnam; two brothers and one sister, Fritz Eichler, Jim Eichler, and Imogene Cheek. He also has many close friends too numerous to name that he loved and considered his extended family.

He served in the United States Air Force and is a retired butcher of over 50 years. He enjoyed doing yard work, gardening, fishing as well as a passion for following and watching college football. Well known in the Levy area for his love of walking down Camp Robinson Road and waving at passing motorists which an article was written about him in the North Little Rock Times. He also sold pecans at Thanksgiving and Christmas time with his white hair and beard and dressed in his red vest he always had stories to tell about the kids thinking he was Santa. He even won a Santa lookalike contest with a local radio station one year which he loved.

AMYE JOBE HICKS, 83, of North Little Rock passed fromthis life to the arms of God on Monday evening, December 16, 2013. She was born June 25, 1930 to Harold and Mamie Jobe in Levy, Ark. She was a loving and devoted wife of 53years to Harold Hicks.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Sandra Tarkington of Sherwood; her son and daughter-inlaw, Bill and Janie Tarkington of Mulberry, Ark.; her stepson and daughter-in-law, Harold and Susan Hicks of Jacksonville; her daughter, Judy Overton of Jacksonville, Ark., and her daughter and son-in-law, Sharlet and Kirk Cybulski of Cabot, Ark. Amye is survived by 11 grandchildren, Kevin, Chris and Shawn Tarkington, Jennifer Erwin, Janet Garrison and Jamie Tarkington, Jeremy, Aaron and Allison Hicks, Davey Overton and Jonathan Hicks; and 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. She is survived by one sibling, Faye Rozier of Eastman, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Frank Tarkington, III, her sister, Anna Belle Orrell and brother, Ronald Jobe.

Amye worked in landscape design until her retirement in 2003. She loved her many pets over the years, especially her dog Hugo, but nothing gave her more pleasure than the time she spent with her husband and family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express deep appreciation to her long-term physician, Claudia Tolleson and staff and also to the team of caring professionals at Baptist Health who watched over her in her final days.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, December19 at North Little Rock Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday, December 20 at 9 a.m., at the Apostolic Church on Landers Road, North Little Rock, followed by graveside service at 10 a.m., at Rest Hills Memorial Park in North Little Rock.

JAMIE M. MAYS, 40, of Mabelvale, died December 13, 2013.He was born October 17, 1973 in Madison, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his mother Deborah Spencer Mays, father Jerry Mays and brother Vincent Adam Sweeton.Jamie will be remembered by his friends and family for his love of the Razorbacks, life, but especially his daughter, Brittany. He was loved by so many and left too soon.

DOLLIE ALBERTA MILLER, 86, of Little Rock, passedaway Sunday, December 15, 2013. She was an active member of Life Line Baptist Church and the Southwest Chamber of AARP. Dollie worked at First Federal Savings and Loan for 20years and enjoyed playing bingo with her friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Northern Miller. She is survived by her son, Clay Stephens and wife Karen of West Monroe, Louisiana; granddaughter, Kim Manning and husband Jay of West Monroe; grandson, Corey Stephens of Gurdon, Arkansas; and by four great-grandchildren, Kylie Stephens, Jordyn Manning, Logan Stephens, and Madyson Manning.

MARY CANICE RICHARDS, 85, of North Little Rock went to bewith the Lord, Sunday, December 15, 2013. She was born in Bernard, Iowa, to the late Edward and Mary (Gaffney) Grace. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husbandRobert Richards, and two brothers, Al and Clete Grace.

Mary worked for many years as a bookkeeper while in Iowa and Arkansas. Her last position was with North Little Rock Advertising and Promotions where she worked for many years.

Mary was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was active in the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Rhubarb Club and enjoyed attending the Shepherd Center and the Hayes Senior Center.

Survivors includes two sons; Steve Richards of Texarkana, Texas, and Phillip Richards (Dayna) of Ft. Smith. Ark.; one daughter, Jan de Regnier of Urbandale, Iowa; four grandchildren, J.T. Richards of Dora, Ark., Parker Nolen of Ft. Smith, Ark., Cole Richards of Little Rock, Ark., and Hilary Nolen of Ft. Smith, Ark.; one brother, Tom Grace of Wheaton, Ill.; two sisters, Eleanor Schuster of Dubuque, Iowa and Winnie Hayes of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

KRYSTYNA SAMEK, 58, of Little Rock peacefully passed awayDec. 17, 2013, with her family by her side. Krystyna was born in Monki, Poland, on Feb. 19, 1955, to the late Aleksander and Janina (Rutkowska) Blaszko. Krystyna was very true toher Catholic faith and regularly attended church at Holy Souls in Little Rock. She loved nature and passed a lot of her time working on and admiring her garden. Most of all, Krystyna enjoyed doing gracious and kind things for anyone who crossed her path. She truly was a modern-day saint and was known for her beauty on the inside and out.

In addition to her parents, Krystyna was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Blaszko. She is survived by her two sons: Krystian A. Samek and his wife, Mary, of Little Rock and Christoph Samek of Houma, La.; one sister, Irena, and her husband, Stig Nygren, of Helsingborg, Sweden; and one brother, Zbigniew Blaszko, and his wife, Tamara, of Little Rock.

Funeral Mass will be held by Krystyna’s good friend, Father Richard Zawadzky, on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church, 1003 North Tyler St., Little Rock. HUNTER LeGRAND SHEPHERD of Little Rock passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at the age of 78 years. He was born in Marianna, Ark., the son of E.L. Shepherd and Thelma Hunter Shepherd. Hunter attended Marianna High School and the University ofArkansas at Monticello. He also attended dental school at the University of Tennessee at Memphis.

Hunter opened his first dental office in Dermott, Ark., in 1964, where he enjoyed practicing for 21 years. In 1985, Hunter opened a dental practice in Jacksonville, Ark., from which he retired in 2004. He was a member of the American Dental Association and past president of the South East Arkansas Dental Association.

Hunter enlisted in the United States Navy upon graduation from dental school, actively serving until 1964. He obtained the rank of full colonel while in the Arkansas National Guard and served as commander of the 204th Dental Detachment. Hunter was proud to serve a total of 43 years in the United States armed forces. Hunter attended Asbury United Methodist Church in Little Rock. He enjoyed tennis, softball and was an avid Razorback fan.

He is preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Faye Gill Shepherd; and sons, Hunter L. (Susie) Shepherd Jr. and David (Janey) Shepherd. He is also survived by his grandson, Anthony McCarley, and granddaughter, Madeline Shepherd; as well as his brother, Bill (Joan) Shepherd, nieces and nephews.

KATHLEEN VIRGINIA WALDORF, 88, of Little Rock passed away Dec.16, 2013. Born in Cando, N.D., April 16, 1925, to parents Ora and Ruby Burkhart, who preceded her in death. Also peceded in death: an infant son and brothers Loren and Dale Burkhart.

CONWAY - Christine Roberts Leggitt of Conway won her battlewith ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) Tuesday morning December 17th, 2013. The family cherishes the fact that her husband, Monty, was waiting for her at the Pearly Gates, along with her beloved son,Randy, and her sweet Mama and Daddy, Charlie and Agnes Roberts.

She attended Greenbrier High School and graduated in 1952. After graduation she moved to Little Rock where she began her big city life. Her little sister, Sandra, bragged to all her friends because her big sis was a real life long distance operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. In fact, her whole family was extremely proud. Christine was happy to share her good fortune with her beloved family on Soda Valley Road where she grew up.

She met her one true love, Monty, and after a quick courtship they eloped to Greenville, Miss., on January 31, 1955. In the next several years they were blessed with three children: Deborah, Randy, and Karen. Christine was a wonderful Mother devoted to raising her children of whom she was very proud. In 1983 she began a thirteen-year career as postmistress for Hendrix College. She retired in 1996. Christine was an active member of Greenbrier Church of the Nazarene of which her grandfather helped found.

She is survived by her two daughters: Deborah Allen (Jim), Karen Sexton (Chip); one sister: Sandra Mann; four grandchildren: Anne-Claire Allen, Gracie Allen, Emma Allen, Andie Sexton, and one soon to be great-granddaughter, Aubrey Christine.

She was a beautiful person both inside and out and she will be greatly missed.

Her family would like to thank the selfless caregivers who devoted their time and love to providing 24 hr. care to “Mrs. Christine”: Nancy Wahpecome, Tammy Cooke, Vickie Frazier, Cora England, Tamara Gentry, Regina Martin, and her beloved sister, Sandra Mann. CROSSETT - Gary Dean Gilbert, age 73, of Crossett, Ark., passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at the Ashley County Medical Center. He was born on January 15, 1940, in Fordyce, Ark., to his parents, Fines and Lonie Barnes Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was an avid outdoorsman and a Baptist. He was retired from Georgia Pacific as a shipping supervisor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, C.C. Mae Gilbert, and a brother, Billy Joe Green. Survivors include three sons: Burt Gilbert and John Gilbert, both of Crossett, Ark., Steven Gilbert of Hamburg, Ark.; one daughter, Lara Kilcrease of Crossett, Ark.; one brother, Jimmie Gilbert of Crossett, Ark.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ENGLAND - Opal Laverne (Susie) Barret, 80, of England,Arkansas, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 17th, 2013. She was born in Keo, Arkansas, March 31st, 1933, to Jack Skaggs and Mamie Weston Skaggs. She went to the Pentecost Church of God where she was a member of the PLA. Opal was known to many children as “Nanny”. She loved her family and carried on the tradition of a family reunion every year on Labor Day weekend.

HEBER SPRINGS - Clifton Wade Stark, age 54, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at the Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock. Born in Heber Springs on May 14, 1959, he was the son of Earnest and Ruby (Smith) Stark.

A lifetime resident of Heber Springs, Clifton worked as a land surveyor for many years and retired from many years of service from Heber Springs Fire Department. He was married to Peggy Sartain on September 12, 1981. Clifton enjoyed hunting, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He was a charter member of the Heber Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, worked with children in the Awana program, and was a Sunday School teacher. Clifton will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor, love for his family and many friends, but most importantly his faith in Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Peggy Stark of Heber Springs; two sons, Seth Andrew Stark and wife, Amanda, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and Bradley Parker Stark and fiancee, Holly Williams, of Addison, Texas; his parents, Earnest and Ruby Stark of Heber Springs; two sisters, Pam Nipper and husband, Gary, of Edgemont and Stephanie Kendrick and husband, Kenny, of Mtn. View; five nephews, Nathan, Daniel, and Luke Nipper and Peyton and Kollin Kendrick; five great-nieces and three great-nephews. Clifton is also survived by other family members and his many friends.

LONOKE - Duane Charles Nisbett, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, died December 17, 2013, from complications of emphysema at the age of 68. He was born on January 28, 1945, in Anniston, Alabama, to William Pauland Lucie Annie Nisbett. As a teenager he lived in Tampa, Florida, and Jacksonville, Arkansas, where he graduated from high school. He began his college career at Louisiana Tech and graduated with a BSE degree in physical education from the State College of Arkansas (now UCA), where he was a past president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He coached football and basketball in Jacksonville for five years and then moved to Lonoke County to manage the Pettus Gin for five years. The remainder of his working years were spent farming, and he retired only because of poor health.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Diane Sargent. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Doyle Nisbett, daughter, Andrea Hecht and grandson, Steven, son, Chad Nisbett and wife Shaundra and grandson, Ryder, sister, Gail Fite of Orlando, Florida and brotherin-law, Frank Sargent of Tavares, Florida.

REDFIELD - F.E. Beitz Jr. of Redfield, Arkansas, was born September 20, 1922, in Little Rock, Arkansas, the son of the late Fred Ernest Beitz Sr. And Addie Gibbs Beitz. He was a member and Deacon of Redfield Missionary Baptist Church, was acharter member of the Interstate Towing Association, a member of American Legion, the Mid-South Car Club and Tmodel Club of Arkansas. He was a Colonel in the Confederate Air Force and was a Sgt. in the United States Army Air Corps and was a MIA and POW while he served. He enjoyed his church work and he always found the good in everyone. Mr. Beitz died at the John L. McClellan Veterans Hospital in Little Rock at the age of 91.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel (Skeet) Beitz, and a sister-in-law, Dove Beitz. Survivors: loving wife of 64 years, Helen Marie Gibbs Beitz of Redfield; daughter, Judy Beitz Walderns and husband Ronnie of Woodson; granddaughters, Rhonda Smith, Amy Davidson and husband Gerald; great-grandchildren, Caleb Smith and Madison Smith; and a host of friends.

He is survived by his mother, Carolyn JuneDeLille, and one son, Justin Marcus DeLille and wife Angela DeWitt DeLille of Rogers. He also leaves his grandson, Jackson Parker DeLille, and two sisters, Bianca DeLille ofWashington, D.C., and Kym Patterson of Bryant, Ark. ARLINGTON, Texas - Mark Anthony Whitehead I, of Arlington, Texas passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2013. He was born on December 1, 1950 in Hillsborough County, Fla., to Monroe and Helen Whitehead. He was employed by H.E.B Grocery Company in Dallas, Texas.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by one son, Matthew Whitehead. He is survived by his sons, Mark Whitehead II of North Little Rock, Ark., Stephen Whitehead of Jacksonville, Ark., his mother Helen Warner of Carthage, Texas, and five grandchildren.
