Report of man begging for gas money leads to chase, police say

A driver led police on a pursuit for several miles early Tuesday after an officer went to investigate a report that he was begging for gas money on a North Little Rock parking lot, authorities said.

William Russell Laster Jr., 49, was arrested on a charge of fleeing.

Police went to a lot at 2522 Arkansas 161 before 1 a.m. after getting a call that a man was begging for gas money in the area, according to a North Little Rock police report.

An officer saw Laster sitting in a car and walked up to the vehicle with his flashlight, and then the car pulled off the lot, the report said. The officer tried to pull it over, but the driver wouldn't and instead led police on a chase for "several miles," the report said.

The driver, Laster, was arrested at 2700 E. Broadway St. after officers used a "stop stick device" to deflate two of the vehicle's tires.

Laster was not listed as an inmate at the Pulaski County jail later Tuesday morning. A court date is set Thursday.
