Vacant school burns down in northeast Arkansas

PARAGOULD — Authorities suspect lightning is to blame for a fire that destroyed a vacant school building in rural Greene County.

The former Stanford High School building burned to the ground over the weekend. Western Greene County Volunteer Fire Department Chief James Potter said the cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but no investigation will be conducted because the building wasn't insured.

Potter said lightning most likely sparked the blaze early Saturday that destroyed the school.

The Paragould Daily Press reported that the school has been vacant since the 1990s when Stanford was consolidated with the Paragould School District.
