MUSTANG, OKLA. 66, ROGERS HERITAGE 61

The War Eagles nearly wiped away a double-digit deficit, but the top-ranked Broncos held on for the win Thursday.

Mustang, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A by Maxpreps and No. 4 by the Oklahoma Coaches Association, clinged to a 62-61 lead with 28 seconds left and managed to tip the ball away from Heritage.

“Crist (Olsen) had made a 3 in the corner to get us within one and it looked like we could get him open for another on the next possession,” Heritage coach Tom Olsen said.

“They made a great play and we fouled immediately.”

Mustang made both free throws, but Heritage (7-3) had another shot to tie but Wyatt Kinnamon’s 3-pointer rattled out. Mustang got the long rebound and scored on a run-out at the buzzer.

“I’m not disappointed in the loss, but I was disappointed in the chance to knock off a really good opponent,” Olsen said. “Our major issue was keeping them off theglass early. They had a 6-9, a 6-6 and two 6-4s. But the kids stayed with it and played great.”

Connor Hirsh led Heritage with 19, while Kinnamon added 14.

The War Eagles will play today at 3:30 in the consolation bracket of the eight-team tournament.
