Sylvan Hills slips by Mountain Home

MOUNTAIN HOME - A 10-0 run to end the third quarter wound up being the difference as the Sylvan Hills Bears knocked off the host Mountain Home Bombers 62-56 on Thursday night in the opening round of the 1 st Arkansas Bail Bonds Tournament at The Hangar.

After the teams battled to a 26-26 tie at intermission, Sylvan Hills scored the first four points of the third quarter only to have Mountain Home come back and tie the score again at 33 with 4:08 left in the quarter.

The Bears scored two layups off two Bombers turnovers before Ronnie Hinton buried consecutive three-pointers in the final minute of the third quarter for a 43-33 lead.

It was 47-37 when Mountain Home fought back to within six after free throws by Howie Wehmeyer and Blake McKee. Then, with 3:47 remaining, a jumper by Derek Curtis pulled the Bombers to within 49-44.

The Bears never could quite pull away from Mountain Home, but they made most of their free throws in the final 3:35 to hold off the Bombers. Mountain Home managed to pull to within 55-51 with 50.8 seconds left when Sky-Lar Culver converted a three-point play.

Sylvan Hills then hit six consecutive free throws and seven of its final eight from the line to post the sixpoint victory.

Cordy Winston led Sylvan Hills with 24 points, scoring 15 in the second half and making 7 of 9 from the free-throw line in the final quarter. Winston scored 13 points for the Bears.

Preston Groesbeck tossed in 14 points for Mountain Home while Culver added 13 and Wehmeyer had 10.

Sylvan Hills will take on Fayetteville tonight in the winners’ bracket semifinals at 8:30 p.m.
