Texas police stop SUV, find driver hauling $1.6 million in pot

ABILENE — Abilene police say they've found marijuana worth an estimated $1.6 million in an SUV they pulled over after getting calls about a reckless driver on a highway.

Police Chief Stan Standridge tells the Abilene Reporter-News the 48-year-old woman driver was in obvious medical distress during the Christmas morning stop on Interstate 20 and told officers she'd been using methamphetamines.

The SUV was a rental and officers searching it found about 180 pounds of marijuana, plus about 2 grams of methamphetamine.

No arrests have been made yet but Standridge says his department will work with federal officials to prosecute the case. He says the woman's been hospitalized in serious condition.

Police say Abilene, about 175 miles west of Dallas, wasn't the likely destination for the pot.
