Golden Lions can’t overcome early deficit

KT Harrell led the way with 19 points as Auburn rolled past Arkansas-Pine Bluff 91-59 on Monday night in Auburn, Ala.

Chris Denson added another 17 points for the Tigers (7-3). Tevin Hammond led UAPB with 19 points.

The Golden Lions (2-10) took a 3-0 lead on Ghiavonni Robinson’s three-pointer 14 seconds into the game, before Auburn rattled off 17 consecutive and led 32-8 with 9:32 remaining in the half. Auburn led by at least 20 points the rest of the way and took a 53-25 lead into halftime.

Auburn shot 65.4 percent (34 of 52) from the field and made 10 of 19 (52.6 percent) from three-point range while UAPB shot 32.8 percent (21 of 64) overall. The Tigers out-rebounded the Golden Lions 41-29.

Harrell’s 19-point performance marked his 10th consecutive game with at least 10 points for the Tigers. Dion Wade added 15 points.

Davon Haynes and DeAndre McIntyre each had 11 points for UAPB, which begins Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday at Mississippi Valley State.

SUN BELT MEN ARKANSAS STATE 91, SOUTHERN ARKANSAS 66

Brandon Reed scored 19 points and had 3 assists and 2 rebounds, Kirk Van Slyke had 17 points and 6 rebounds and Melvin Johnson added 16 points and 6 rebounds in Arkansas State’s victory Monday night at the Convcation Center in Jonesboro.

The Red Wolves (7-4) shot 48.2 percent from the floor. The Division II Muleriders (4-5) shot 42.4 percent from the floor and were only out-rebounded 35-33.

Jeffrey Walker led Southern Arkansas with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting while grabbing nine rebounds. Chauncy Williams had 16 points, shooting 7 of 18 from the field and grabbing 2 rebounds.

SUN BELT WOMEN TEXAS A&M 80, ARKANSAS STATE 62

Courtney Williams had a career-high 27 points as Texas A&M increased its home record to 6-0 with a victory over Arkansas State on Monday night at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas.

The Aggies (9-4) opened the game on an 11-2 run and did not let Arkansas State any closer than seven points in the first half. Williams scored 14 as the Aggies took a 44-30 lead at halftime.

Arkansas State (6-6) had a 9-2 run early in the second half, but only cut the lead to six points once.

When the Red Wolves cut the Aggies deficit to 64-58 with 5:08 remaining, the Aggies went on a 19-2 run that extended into the game’s final minute that built up a 77-60 lead.

SOUTHLAND MEN CENTRAL ARKANSAS 121, ECCLESIA 77

Jalen Jackson finished with 21 points and 9 rebounds and Tirrell Brown had a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds to carry Central Arkansas to a rout of Ecclesia at the Farris Center in Conway.

The point total was the highest for a UCA team since the Bears scored 142 against Philander Smith in 1990. The Bears (3-8) snapped a five game losing streak. They will open Southland Conference play Thursday night at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Jackson also added a team high seven assists and tied for the lead with four steals.

LaQuentin Miles and Ethan Lee each had 14 points.

UCA forced 20 turnovers in the first half on its way to a 53-27 halftime lead. The Bears’ defense forced 28 turnovers in the game.

Ecclesia (3-11) was led by Austin Burroughs, who had 19 points.

SOUTHLAND WOMEN CENTRAL ARKANSAS 85, PHILANDER SMITH 57

Central Arkansas had its highest-scoring first half of the season, building a 48-26 halftime lead en route to a victory over Philander Smith at the Farris Center in Conway.

Courtney Duever had 21 points, 11 rebounds and a season-high 5 steals in 19 minutes to lead the Sugar Bears (6-5).

Kelsei Ewings scored a season-high 19 points. Maggie Proffitt added 10 points, including two three-pointers.
