BASKETBALL UCA’s Miles honored by Southland

Central Arkansas senior guard LaQuentin Miles was named the Southland Conference men’s player of the week Monday.

Miles scored 28 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds on Saturday against Nebraska-Omaha. Miles also had 5 assists, 2 steals and 1 block against the Mavericks. In two games since regaining his eligibility, which also included a 28-point effort against Charleston Southern on Dec. 21, he has averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Against Nebraska-Omaha, he made 11 of 24 shots from the floor and made 6 of 9 free throws. His 16 rebounds accounted for nearly half of the team’s total of 34. They were were the most by a UCA player since Jarvis Garner had 15 against McNeese State last January.

Hendrix women defeat Schreiner

Hendirx College overcame a 15-point deficit to beat Schreiner University 64-61 in the final of the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Holiday Classic on Monday at Grove Gymnasium in Conway.

Schreiner led 54-39 with 10:16 to play before Hendrix went on a 25-7 run to finish the game. Hendrix took its first lead when sophomore point guard Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler made a three-pointer with 1:04 left to put the Warriors up 63-61.

Peyton Hurst made a free throw with 23 seconds left to set the final score. Schreiner had two shots in the final seconds, but missed them.

Kriesel-Bigler led Hendrix (5-6) with 12 points and 3 assists. Senior forward Katie Coughran, freshman guard Taylor Neal and freshman forward Anna King each had 10 points.

Lindsey Peterson and Kelsie Jackson each scored 20 for Schreiner.
