House members, Beebe to discuss steel-mill bonds

— A spokesman says Gov. Mike Beebe plans to meet with House lawmakers next week to discuss his proposal to issue $125 million in state-backed bonds to help land a large steel mill in the state.

Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample said Friday that the governor would appear before the House next Wednesday to answer questions about the $1.1 billion mill that Big River Steel says it wants to build in northeast Arkansas.

Beebe says the Legislature needs to approve $125 million in bond financing to secure the project.

House Speaker Davy Carter said Friday that he would hold a “committee of the whole” so that lawmakers could begin conducting their due diligence on the proposal.

The Senate is set to hold its own meeting about the project with Beebe on Monday.
