My favorite space: My art studio in Little Rock.

Why? This is my space to enter and become creative, and it works perfectly for watercolor, which is what I do most. I put it on the north side of the building for the north light and made sure it was big enough (about 600 square feet). It’s open and airy, and shares the high trussed ceiling of the overall warehouse loft space. It’s practical: I have a sink, a necessity for watercolor; a wall to pin up visual ideas and works in progress; a desk where I can organize my website and scan and photograph images; and plenty of storage for artwork and supplies. My studio shares light from the gallery space’s large skylight, and I like having it next to a gallery display space where I can see how finished (or maybe not!) paintings “work” alongside others.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Put myself into it more and be better at closing myself off from my phone and the rest of a fairly busy life. I have learned to use earphones and listen to music, which helps that problem. But I have also learned that it’s important to focus my mind. When the focus happens, I don’t know what’s going on anywhere else.
