February Exhibit Opening Reception

Genealogy Society Meeting

Featured speaker Sheila Beatty will discuss how and where to do research on the Orphan Train riders, which refers to the placement of more than 200,000 orphaned or abandoned children in homes throughout the Midwest from 1854 to 1929. Members of Beatty’s maternal family have been Arkansans since the 1850s, and her father was an Orphan Train rider who was raised in Arkansas. Ouachita Sounds Spring Concert
ARKADELPHIA — Ouachita Baptist University will host the 10-member show choir Ouachita Sounds in its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Jones Performing Arts Center. Selections will include a Michael Jackson medley, a tribute to Whitney Houston and a mash-up from the movie Pitch Perfect, arranged by the women of Ouachita Sounds. Mardi Gras Party
HOT SPRINGS — The Hot Springs Jazz Society “Krewe” will produce its first Mardi Gras Party Dance to the Beat on Orange Street from 6-10 p.m. in the old Hot Springs High School Field House on Orange Street. Entertainment will be by the Spa City Stompers, Sweet Mother and Zydeco Stingrays. There will be a costume contest with prizes valued at up to $500, food and a raffle. Limited reserved tables of eight on the dance floor are available for $500 per table. General admission is $20 or $10 for Jazz Society members. Sister City Teacher Scholarships
HOT SPRINGS — The Hot Springs National Park Sister City Foundation will accept applications until March 25 for two teacher scholarships for summer travel to Hanamaki, Japan, Hot Springs’ sister city. Teachers or school administrators currently employed in Garland County public schools are eligible for the program. The scholarship will fully fund travel costs for a seven-day trip to Hanamaki in mid-June. The city of Hanamaki will provide home-stay arrangements, along with tours and educational opportunities. Junior Auxiliary Scholarships
HOT SPRINGS — The Junior Auxiliary of Hot Springs is accepting applications for the 2013 JAHS Scholarship program through March 1. The Junior Auxiliary gives emphasis to students majoring in a child-related field such as speech therapy, nursing, social work, teaching, etc. There is no age restriction for the scholarships. HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Property Owners’ Association is soliciting applications from property owners in good standing who are willing to serve on the 2013 Election Day Committee, which oversees the ballot counting for the Hot Springs Village Board of Directors election. Band Blast Music Celebration
