Beebe opposes bill on secret gun-permit list

By The Associated Press

This article was published February 5, 2013 at 12:56 p.m.

— Gov. Mike Beebe says he doesn’t support a bill in the Senate that would keep the state’s list of concealed handgun permit holders secret.

Beebe said Tuesday that he’s generally opposed to attempts to restrict the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act.

The present law allows the release of the names and ZIP codes of permit holders. That law was passed two years ago as a compromise, when there was a push to make the entire list secret.

A Beebe spokesman says the 2009 law was an appropriate compromise and that the restrictions shouldn’t be taken further.

A newspaper in New York published names and addresses of permit holders in 2012 after the Newtown, Conn., school massacre.

Holland says his bill is a way to prevent similar a publication in Arkansas.

CCP are subject to background checks which is private information. If everyone wants their credit info and tax records published because they they use these items for public purposes then have at it. Its none of Anyones business that someone might have a CCP. All this hand wrenching is a joke. I can legally buy a full auto weapon any time I want to, yet the ill literate public and Press never mention it.

As a CC permit holder I agree with Beebe due to the FOIA, and the fact I couldn't care less who knows I'm packing. Two to the chest, one to the head.

The reason for so much concern in New York was the lack of guns in homes and making the listed ones easy targets. Pick any house or vehicle in Arkansas and there is probably a gun in it.

FOI? Try this, pick a license plate at random tomorrow and then call ADFA and ask for the name and address of the individual the plate is issued to, use to be you could get the information, my bet is that you can’t any longer.

For $29.95 I can find out where you live, where you were married, where you were born, any criminal record, and probably if you have this permit.

Where does the media come off calling this a "secret gun-permit list." It's not a secret to the state, or any law-enforcement officer who queries his on-board computer database. It would be secret only to the prying eyes of the media, which has nothing but the threat of civil litigation to keep it honest. And, by then, it's all over but the crying.

What part of CONCEAL do they not understand. It's named that for a reason.

So what if they publish names of those with concealed license to carry. It's the intent or the big push behind the bill that is worrisome . .

Knowing where those concealed weapons are at is important information for citizens... Would the state NOT tell us where explosives or hazardous wastes are located..???
.
It has nothing to do with if we would go in and try to remove them.. It has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that we may not want to LIVE near them..!!!
