Beebe: Still concerned about abortion bill

By The Associated Press

This article was published February 6, 2013 at 1:46 p.m.

— Gov. Mike Beebe says he still has concerns about legislation to ban most abortions in the state despite a lawmaker’s plan to ease the proposed restriction.

Beebe told reporters Wednesday that he still is concerned about the proposal to ban most abortions if a fetal heartbeat is detected. He said an amendment planned that would specify an abdominal ultrasound be used doesn’t alleviate those concerns.

Beebe stopped short of saying he opposes the bill.

Requiring an abdominal ultrasound would ban abortions as early as 10 to 12 weeks into a pregnancy. The original version of the bill would have banned them as early as six weeks.

The Senate approved the ban last week.
