— The U.S. Postal Service plans to end Saturday mail deliveries beginning as soon as August to cut financial losses, according to a spokesman for the service.

The service, which lost $15.9 billion last year, would need congressional approval to end the Saturday deliveries.

The service would continue six-day deliveries of packages, the official said.

By ending the Saturday delivery of letters, the service would reduce costs by as much as $2 billion a year.

Should go to every-other day deliveries - MWF on half the routes and TThSa on the other half. Every day delivery (even on a 5 day week) is expensive and inefficient given the kind of mail we get via USPS>

I don't understnd, YOU determine the kind of mail you get. They just deliver it.

BillSmith, do we decide what junk mail we get? I don't think so. Actually I'd rather see them take out a weekday and keep Saturday.

UPS, FedX, DHL, etc are very profitable companies--USPS needs to be privitized and then maybe they could be run efficiently--Only thing USPS knows to do is "reduce services"--anyone that's ever run a business (i did for 40 yrs.) knows once you reduce services and customer care--you're on the way out!!

Good idea, it is time for everyone to look for ways to save money. RB is exactly right, I would guess that 75% of my mail is for advertisments that I did not request. I am all for the USPS succeeding because they are the best deal out their for regular mail, however, 6 days per week is no longer needed.

How is this going to save much money when the postal employees will still be working Saturdays?

Who really wants to get junk mail on Saturday any way?

Do away with bulk cost mailing. Everyone pays the same for a letter or junk mail. By going MWF / TuThSa you can cut the staff almost in half. Fix PAPE.
