February Exhibit Opening Reception

ARKADELPHIA — The public is invited to attend an opening reception from 4-6 p.m. today at the Arkadelphia Arts Center for the February exhibit, Community Celebration of Black History Month: Focus on Education Through the Years. Genealogy Society Meeting

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Village Genealogical Society will meet at 2 p.m. in Room 6 of the Coronado Community Center. Anyone interested in family research is welcome to attend. Featured speaker Sheila Beatty will discuss how and where to do research on the Orphan Train riders, which refers to the placement of more than 200,000 orphaned or abandoned children in homes throughout the Midwest from 1854 to 1929. Members of Beatty’s maternal family have been Arkansans since the 1850s, and her father was an Orphan Train rider who was raised in Arkansas. Style Show for Scholarships

HOT SPRINGS — The Style Show for Scholarships benefiting the Garland County Single Parent Scholarship Fund will be presented at noon at the Forest Lakes Clubhouse. The style show will feature fashions from the Lagniappe Shoppe, special music by Michele Webb, a catered lunch and a silent auction. Tickets are $20. The fund provides scholarships to men and women of Garland County who demonstrate financial need, are single parents and are enrolled in a postsecondary educational course of study leading to a degree, diploma or certificate of graduation. Zipper Pin Craft Class

Ouachita Sounds Spring Concert

ARKADELPHIA — Ouachita Baptist University will host the 10-member show choir Ouachita Sounds in its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Jones Performing Arts Center. Selections will include a Michael Jackson medley, a tribute to Whitney Houston and a mash-up from the movie Pitch Perfect, arranged by the women of Ouachita Sounds. Mardi Gras Party

HOT SPRINGS — Master Illusionist Maxwell Blade will be the master of ceremonies for the Hot Springs Jazz Society’s first Mardi Gras party from 6-10 p.m. in the Old Hot Springs Field House on Orange Street. Blade is an award-winning performer who brings to the stage magic, music and comedy. Music will be by the Spa City Stompers, Sweet Mother and Zydeco Stingrays. Dancing, juggling, tarot reading, a costume contest, face painting, king cupcakes, beer, wine, Cajun food and more are planned for the evening. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person, or $10 for Jazz Society members. Super Tax Filing Day

BRYANT — A Super Tax Filing Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CADC Bryant Senior Activity Center, 6401 Boone Road, No. 3. Walk-ins are welcome. Many low-wage workers will qualify for the Earned Income Credit for the first time because their income declined or they became unemployed. Tax refunds through the EIC and the Child Tax Credit can help low- and moderate-income families cover day-to-day expenses such as utilities, rent and child care. Sister City Teacher Scholarships

HOT SPRINGS — The Hot Springs National Park Sister City Foundation will accept applications until March 25 for two teacher scholarships for summer travel to Hanamaki, Japan, Hot Springs’ sister city. Teachers or school administrators currently employed in Garland County public schools are eligible for the program. The scholarship will fully fund travel costs for a seven-day trip to Hanamaki in mid-June. The city of Hanamaki will provide home-stay arrangements, along with tours and educational opportunities. Junior Auxiliary Scholarships

HOT SPRINGS — The Junior Auxiliary of Hot Springs is accepting applications for the 2013 JAHS Scholarship program through March 1. Applications are available through area high school counselors or by visiting www.juniorauxiliaryofhotsprings.com and clicking on the “scholarship” link. The Junior Auxiliary gives emphasis to students majoring in a child-related field such as speech therapy, nursing, social work, teaching, etc. There is no age restriction for the scholarships. HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Property Owners’ Association is soliciting applications from property owners in good standing who are willing to serve on the 2013 Election Day Committee, which oversees the ballot counting for the Hot Springs Village Board of Directors election. Band Blast Music Celebration

JESSIEVILLE — The Hot Springs Concert Band will present the eighth annual Band Blast Music Celebration at 3 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Jessieville Sports Arena at Jessieville High School. The event will feature cholesterol, blood-glucose, blood-pressure and body-mass-index screenings, along with information about heart-healthy diets, cardiovascular exercise tips and the link between sleep health and heart disease. Toast and Roast of Darrel Teeter

MALVERN — The Hot Spring County Medical Foundation will hold its annual fundraiser to benefit Hot Spring County Medical Center. This year, the event will be a Toast and Roast of Darrel Teeter at 6 p.m. March 2 at the Lodge at Family Farm owned by the May family, 18448 U.S. 67, just outside of Malvern. The evening will include dinner and silent and live auctions, with a car donated by Teeter Motors to be auctioned. Teeter, who has been in the car business for more than half of a century, moved to Malvern in 1967 when he took on a Chrysler dealership. A Flute Spa

ARKADELPHIA — The Hot Springs Flute Ensemble and Ouachita Baptist University will sponsor internationally known performer, teacher and clinician Patricia George in a workshop for flute players. The event, titled A Flute Spa, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 2 at OBU. The preregistration fee is $30, and the deadline is Feb. 23. The fee at the door will be $35.
