It is said the “wets” in Arkansas now are hiding in the tall brush in abject fear and trembling because the “drys” have taken to boots and saddle and are riding roughshod over the hills of Arkansas. As a result of the militant spirit rampant in the Arkansas legislature, the close of the coming week may see this state numbered among those that have gone dry.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 10, 1963 SMITHVILLE - After two months, nearly 5,000 chickens on the Bill Wade farm here are still viewing life through rose-colored glasses. Late last year Wade fitted small pairs of pink-tinted glasses on 5,000 of his chickens. The glasses are fastened to the beak through the nostril openings. Wade said theycause no discomfort and are difficult for the chicken to lose. Only about five of the original 5,000 have lost their glasses, Wade said. The bespectacled chickens chase the others under the roost and show other signs of displeasure, Wade said. The reason for the glasses is to discourage chickens from pecking one another and to encourage egg laying.

Urban League of Arkansas officials announced Tuesday that two Arkansas Democrat reporters who have written about the League no longer would be allowed in the agency’s office at 2200 Main Street. At a press conference, H. Benjamin Williams, first vice chairman of the League’s board, said Democrat reporters Tyler Tucker and Jim Keary had not reported “complete facts” about the League’s management of the Pulaski County Head Start program and its finances.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 10, 2003 ROGERS - Future charter school applications approved by the state must have more clearly defined student-performance goals, according to an evaluation of the state’s first two charter schools. The Arkansas Charter Schools Act of 1999 requires an annual evaluation of the state’s open-enrollment charter schools. The report’s primary finding is that the Benton County School of the Arts in Rogers and Academics Plus Charter School in Maumelle have vague mission statements that cannot be measured by student achievement data.
