Fort Smith Masonic Temple put up for sale

— The historic Masonic Temple in Fort Smith is up for sale.

The Belle Point Lodge and Western Arkansas Scottish Rite owns the building. Group member David Arnold told the Southwest Times Record that it’s become too costly for the organization to keep up with the building’s repairs.

The building, located in downtown Fort Smith, opened in 1929. It’s listed for sale for about $750,000.

The temple was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

According to the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, the building is one of the state’s few known examples of the Egyptian Revival style of architecture.

Arnold says he hopes a buyer steps forward and that the building can still be used in the community.
