UALR hires new Public Safety director, chief of police

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will have new director of Public Safety and chief of police on campus in March.

UALR's Finance and Administration Vice Chancellor Bob Adams named Edward L. Smith of Shawnee, Okla., as the university's director of Public Safety and campus chief of police on Wednesday, according to a news release from the school.

The release states that Smith brings with him more than 35 years of law enforcement experience to the Little Rock campus. That experience includes chief of police roles at numerous Oklahoma police departments, specialized training and work with the Secret Service and FBI.

Smith also served as division commander at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville Police Department from 2000 to 2001, where he implemented the Incident Command System for major events and developed security and traffic-control procedures for athletic events on campus, the release states.

Smith will assume his position at UALR on March 18. A university official said his salary will be $78,000.
