Lawmaker files open-carry gun legislation

By The Associated Press

This article was published February 20, 2013 at 1:06 p.m.

— An Arkansas lawmaker is proposing legislation to allow the open carry of handguns in the state.

Republican Rep. Sue Scott of Rogers filed a bill Wednesday that would replace Arkansas’ current concealed carry law with an open carry statute.

The measure, which is backed by 19 other House co-sponsors and one senator, would require the same permitting process as the licenses for concealed carry. Openly displaying handguns would still be prohibited at certain locations, such as government offices, some establishments where alcohol is served, and private property where the owner has expressly forbidden it.

New open carry permits would be valid for five years. Under the bill, the nearly 130,000 concealed carry permits in the state would be automatically converted to an open carry licenses.

They could shoot a lawyer; would that be frowned upon?

This is really another silly, useless but potentially harmful law. Gas at over $3 a gallon, insurance costs increasing, highways need repair, the state in desperate need of more jobs and the answer is more guns.

My 2 "sense".....currently I carry concealed, no one knows I carry a 45 caliber "hidden" If I carry "open" as did the old cowboys, everyone, good and evil can see it. example. I am at the quick shop, I have my weapon in the open, the owner has his weapon in open, some scumbag thinks he wants to rob the place, he looks through the door and says no way, They are armed..Ill look for an easier mark....

It's about time this 1 horse state moved into the 21st century. An Armed Society Is A Safe Society. This sends a loud and clear message to the low lifes that feed off of law abiding citizens......We have drawn a line in the sand.....DO NOT cross it.

It won't be long after this law goes into effect, that little boy crumb grabbers will want to start open packing of their toy glocks just like old dad. Arkansas you voted for these nut bags, you are worried about your kids financial future and not about their physcological state of mind down the road, reap what you soweth.
