A Little Rock student was arrested Monday morning after authorities discovered he was in possession of a handgun at school.

A Little Rock police report states that officers were called to Hall High School about 10:05 a.m. by school security. According to the report, a school security officer performing a random classroom scan searched the 16-year-old student, whose name was withheld, and found a handgun hidden on him.

Students were asked to clear the classroom as a result.

Although the 9mm handgun wasn't loaded, the report states an ammunition clip was found in the student's gym shorts, which he was wearing under his jeans. The student was taken into custody without incident.

The gun was taken by authorities and stored as evidence. The student was taken to the juvenile detective division for questioning and charged with possession of a handgun on school grounds.

I went to Hall. It was a nice school back then. I wonder why?

Thugs ............. they need to start scanning everyone and doing random drug tests.

They need to start taking children away from their drug addict parents. Truancy, child neglect, child abuse, and drug abuse just seem to be ignored in Little Rock. It has become a breeding ground for crime. By the time the kids are in high school, it usually is too late to save them. Children of unfit parents need to be taken away ASAP. When they are young and not too damaged, they usually can find placement. When they are older, they are better off in an orphanage.

@ Populist, Great, take them out of drug abusing families and put them in drug using foster mills that are all over the state. You are so kind.

The kid should have waited a couple weeks, and the Legislature will likely have made it legal, if not required, to be packing heat there...

DemocratRepublican,

There are not enough decent foster homes to take care of all the needy children. We need more state funding for therapeutic group homes. I know the Methodists have them in Little Rock and across the state. The Catholics used to have St. Joseph's orphanage. I don't know if the Catholics have group homes and whether the Baptists and others have them in Little Rock and elsewhere. I am not a social worker though I have done volunteer work for at-risk youth. It is not always to find an appropriate place for the children. I googled one of the suspects in one of the crimes described in the Gazette the other day. Apparently, he was named after his father who was serving time for dealing coke. I wondered how that kid's life could have been different if he had been placed in a better situation at a young age. Unfortunately, I fear that racism and apathy are too common in Little Rock, and that drug trafficking, child neglect, and truancy are just ignored. People want to blame all the problems on black culture, when much of the blame can be caused by poor social services and bad schools. Our not too distant forefathers failed to adequately fund schools in black areas, and it appears the current generation wants to underfund social services and schools and just send their kids to private schools. Even if you want to send your kids to private schools, you should still want good services and good schools for the good of the community. Too many wealthy white people live in gated communities and send their kids to private schools. Too many well educated blacks simply flee the state to live in a more progressive (less racist) area of the country. Life could be better in Little Rock if social services and the schools are improved.

Hey Populist - The only real solution is to vote Republican. Demorat social policies forced upon society by political correctness for several decades have created a government dependent demographic/culture that now manifests itself in a life of crime, poverty, and lack of concern for the attainment of a quality education. You can harp all you want about the need for more education, more social programs, or more of whatever government social engineering makes you feel better, but it's all a lot of hot air until we begin to elect policy makers who promote self-reliance and personal accountability over government assistance.

Yeah Populist, white folks living behind gates. It's there fault. My wife and I work hard to send our child to a private school. Plus my tax dollars go to fund public schools as well. Unreal. Practice what you preach, take in a needy child. I'm waiting. Come on, do it. Whats stoping you? Come on, put your money where your mouth is. Let's get on with it. No excuses.

Populist is no liberal. She's a, well, populist. She gets it. Get'em out of the environment before they are bent. That happens BEFORE they ever get to school. By the time they are in school, it's mostly too late. But we all know we aren't going to get them out. It is not going to happen and you can't undo the bad effects of a crappy culture on early childhood development with school and activities.
~
It looks pretty hopeless. My best friend for life had his son killed in gang violence. I knew that promising 18 year old since he was born. He was no banger, but had banger friends - that comes with the culture. My best friend has dedicated himself to solving the crappy culture effect on early childhood development. He has attained political office based on that effort. He hasn't given up, and he won't give up, but he is frustrated.
~
This is not a racial thing. This is a culture thing.
There's no evidence showing that persons of different ethnic groups have more than superficial genetic differences. The genetic variation within ethnic groups is at least as great, if not greater than, the variation *between* ethnic groups, while behavior varies widely between different cultural groups sharing similar ethnic backgrounds.
~
Bottom line - our human hardware is all the same. It's the software we run that makes all the difference. The programming starts at infancy.

Murphy, I believe Populist's children ARE adopted. Plus she has volunteered for organizations that assist at risk youth. She has written about both these things in the past. She has done her part.

Murphy,

Yes, I tried to adopt a couple of older kids, but those did not happen and I received two babies instead. As my mother was adopted from St Joseph's, I do care about orphans. I'm currently at a break at an education meeting. I've done significant work for foster kids. We need better resources for children in Little Rock. At least two kids have died in the last year in little rock when they should have been in school.

Populist would your children be in public schools in LR if you were forced to live here?

Populist says... February 27, 2013 at 6:46 a.m.

I don't think that I would let them go to Hall in its current condition, and I grew up around Hall High and both my sister and brother went there. There are some decent public schools and programs in Little Rock, but you must be very careful about where you live. I probably would live in Hillcrest (my favorite part of Little Rock) and let my little one attend Pulaski Heights Middle School. If one has the money and lives in a portion of Little Rock with bad schools, I would advise these people to send their kids to private schools. However, everybody should support the public schools as they are vital to the good of the community. The crime situation in Little Rock is out of hand. When drugs spiral out of control and social services is not pulling the children out of bad situations, you have an epidemic of crime, which is what occurs in parts of D.C., Baltimore, and now Little Rock.

Also, parents need to look before they leap and look at the strengths and weaknesses of the child. I think the honor programs at Central are top notch, but if you've got a kid who struggles, he or she may be better off at Catholic or MSM. Some parents, however, pay for their kids to go to a "private" school when they may be in a district with a top notch public school. greatschoolsdotorg has a good rating system for public and private.

My dad went to Hall, cousins all went to Parkview and Central, and we are fortunate to have our boys in a very good public school. My fifth grader is shadowing in sixth grade at a public school once a week. We have checked it out and feel very good about it. We do not want ours in private school actually but will put them there if we feel they need it. My wife did just fine in public schools and graduated summa cum laude in college and paid her way 100% while working full time; I know it is different now but we will let it play out

@populist, what does this mean? "If one has the money and lives in a portion of Little Rock with bad schools". Exactly what is a bad school and what is the racial makeup of this so called 'bad' school? Is a bad school or a bad neighborhood just CODE for where black people are? Populist, you are a racist and you didn't even know it.

Populist says... February 28, 2013 at 7:56 a.m.

DemocratRepublican,

You are the one who has made racist comments here--not me. I have not looked at the racial makeup of the Little Rock schools and am not an expert on the different programs available at each school. I am basing my comments on quality on the respected rating institution greatschoolsdotorg. Central has a 6 rating; Hall has a 1. I think there are many blacks in attendance at many of the finer schools. I know that there are many blacks whose academic credentials exceeding my one--the president and first lady for example. The GPAs at Vandy Law were not public unless you were in the top 10, but there was a guy in the class behind me who was in third place when I graduated. This is with blind grading. Although I am on a competitive trivia team (nerdy I know), I have no doubt that the young gentleman who won Teen Jeopardy could whip my butt.

I used to live down the street from Pulaski Heights Middle School, which is highly rated, and there were many blacks in attendance there. I suspect that some of the highly rated downtown schools have large black populations. Indeed, educational problems in Little Rock are not limited to blacks. The whites in Little Rock and Arkansas have lagged whites nationally for years. Until more people start caring more about education and the well being of Arkansas' youth, the economy in Arkansas is going to continue to lag because the population is not highly skilled.

purplebouquet says... February 28, 2013 at 9:51 a.m.

As far as I can tell as the mother of two children (white) who have attended LR public schools since kindergarten and done very well, a lot of problems can be traced back to struggling family homes, especially those households headed by single/never-married (?) mothers who don't have any support from their children's fathers. Statistically, more black families are in that situation. Even with unlimited funding, can any public institution such as a school adequately compensate for what's missing at home? I doubt that, especially if we are dealing with parents who don't send their children to school regularly, who leave their kids unattended for days at a time or who pull their kids out of classes where homework is required, all of which I have observed among my children's peers.
