Crews replacing historic bridge in north Arkansas

By The Associated Press

This article was published January 7, 2013 at 8:22 a.m.

— Crews are working to replace a bridge over the North Fork River that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The bridge on Arkansas 5 over the North Fork River was among those identified as structurally deficient and due for replacement.

Arkansas assessed its bridges after 13 people were killed in the 2007 collapse of a bridge over the Mississippi River at Minneapolis.

The Baxter Bulletin reported that the North Fork bridge has been listed on the historic register since 1990.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says it’s completed documentation of the bridge and that a historic marker will be placed nearby.

Officials say construction on the new bridge is expected to be done within a year.
