McDaniel to talk to press after admitting relationship

By The Associated Press

This article was published January 7, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.

— Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel is expected to talk to reporters this week after admitting last month that he’d had an extramarital relationship with a Hot Springs lawyer.

McDaniel is slated to meet with reporters Tuesday — weeks after he acknowledged having a relationship with attorney Andrea Davis, who had handled cases McDaniel’s office defended.

Davis did not respond to a phone message left Monday.

McDaniel is the only announced Democratic candidate for the 2014 governor’s race. He has been married since 2009. He said he met Davis during his 2010 re-election bid.

Davis represented a group of parents who successfully challenged the state’s school choice law. McDaniel’s office represented state education officials in that case.

I hope that the Democratic Party of Arkansas gets its act together and either unites behind Bill Halter or a fresh face. The Party Chairman and powerful figures in the party need to work on getting a good candidate for governor. There should be some legislator who is ethical and can be an articulate spokesman for education and the environment.

If McDaniel wants to have a chance at a future political career, he needs to step out of politics for a while and concentrate on his marriage. This man does not have a chance of winning the governor's office, the best he could do is the Democratic nomination.
