Jury selection begins in 2002 double slaying

— Jury selection is under way in the capital murder trial of a former doctor charged in a decade-old double slaying in central Arkansas.

Jury selection began Thursday in Conway in the capital murder trial of 63-year-old Richard Conte.

Conte was charged with two counts of capital murder in 2011 in the 2002 shooting deaths of 49-year-old Carter Elliott and 25-year-old Timothy Wayne Robertson in Conway.

He has pleaded not guilty.

The charges were filed shortly before Conte was released from a Nevada prison where he served a sentence for kidnapping his ex-wife, Lark Gathright-Elliott — who was once married to Carter Elliott.

Prosecutor Cody Hiland is not seeking the death penalty in the case. Conte faces life in prison without parole if convicted.
