TAFT, Calif. A student was shot and wounded at a rural San Joaquin Valley high school Thursday and another student was taken into custody, officials said.
The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. at Taft Union High School, a community of fewer than 10,000 people amidst oil and natural gas production fields about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
The student who was shot was flown to a hospital in Bakersfield, said Ray Pruitt, spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department. There was no immediate word on the victim’s condition.
Pruitt said the suspect is a student, and a shotgun was used in the attack.
Kern County Fire Department Eric Coughran told KBAK-TV that another person suffered some type of injuries in the incident but refused medical attention.
KERO-TV Bakersfield reported that the station received phone calls from people inside the school who hid in closets.
It was not immediately clear how many students are enrolled at the high school, which teaches 9th through 12th grades.
The Taft shooting came less than a month after a gunman massacred 20 children and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., then killed himself.
That shooting prompted President Barack Obama to promise new efforts to curb gun violence. Vice President Joe Biden, who was placed in charge of the initiative, said Tuesday in Washington, D.C., that he would deliver new policy proposals to the president by next week.

You know, I hear the NRA invented "cars kill people more than guns do" line so much. We license drivers, charge them for the privilege, force them to insure against damage they cause, and revoke privileges when abused. Good idea, huh?

Ah poor little gooey got his feelings hurt; do you think Mr. Lapierre is out buying Kobe beef and lobster tails right now for a big dinner after hearing this news? Heck he's probably sending Dom and Cristal to every table in the restaurant. Goo isn't free speech great? It's just too bad sometimes your comments get banned.

RainbowHarold, that is a very astute comment. Gun nuts love the second amendment, but only up to the comma, after which it says "being necessary for a well regulated militia." I ask again, what militia do these people belong to, and who in hell is regulating them?

Inquire the rest of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution after that comma IS the "right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." YOU may not like it but GET OVER IT!

So T6 you are saying the anti gun nuts are talking out of context? I am so shocked! Don't worry, they will blame Fox News for everything. It's no wonder Fox continues to kill their competition, even without assault rifles!

I don't own a gun, have stated it repeatedly on these pages. It's funny how everyone intreprets everything to fit their agenda.

It's easy to spot the Fox fans here. Just look for substandard communication skills, inability to form a cogent argument for or against anything at all, and a general unpleasantness which stems from recognizing that their kind of hatemongering, jingoistic troglodyte is dying off more quickly every damn day.
Fish in a barrel.

You're right, I keep changing my identity googoo but leave my avatar the same and anyone with half a brain can figure out who anyone is. It makes it easy to show the absurdity of posting somewhere you can do and say anything you want with no culpability. Somehow you are equating changing names on a website with people purposely misinterpreting the Second Amendment. Man you win!

Does anyone else find it ironic that the shooter in the school in CA yesterday did not use a weapon that would be banned by this run at gun control? However, he WAS a known menace that had previously "planned" this activity and went so far as to have a "hit list" of kids he planned to kill (the injured kid was first on the list). He was expelled from this same school last year, then allowed to return this year. The parents of the targeted kids were not allowed to know that he had returned, because the school couldn't violate his "right" by releasing that information.
****
The guns are simply the vehicle by which these type of people reach their goals. This kid would have tried a bomb, knife, samurai sword, "illegal" gun, ax....heck, even a car to get the people on his list. The REAL problems are not being addressed.

The irony did not escape me, but it does not diminish the fact that he would have been able to do a lot more harm with those other weapons. He would have been able to take out anyone who tried to interfere with him.
The number of guns on the street, the number of gun sales per DAY is frightening and horrifying to any sane person. It's like a cancer ready to get the innocent at any time. This is not the way normal people want to live.
