Hot Springs Application Deadline

HOT SPRINGS — The city of Hot Springs will accept board and commission applications for volunteer advisory positions until 5 p.m. Friday. Applicants must be registered voters of the city of Hot Springs. Campus Closings

HOT SPRINGS — The National Park Community College campus will be closed Friday for a faculty/staff workshop. College classes for the spring semester will start Saturday for Saturday classes and Monday for non-Saturday classes. The campus will also be closed Jan. 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Delegate Application Deadline

HOT SPRINGS — Monday is the deadline for eighth- through 11th-graders to submit applications to be part of the 2013 Sister City student delegation traveling to Hanamaki, Japan, in July. The weeklong educational study trip is sponsored by the Hot Springs National Park Sister City Foundation. Five to 10 students will be chosen to travel to Hanamaki as representatives of Hot Springs and will be expected to participate in Sister City programs and promotions throughout the year. Henderson Registration

ARKADELPHIA — Registration for the 2013 spring semester at Henderson State University will be held Monday. Students who haven’t preregistered can register in their advisers’ offices from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Classes will begin Tuesday. The following locations in the Garrison Center have been designated for the registration process: business office payments, Cabe Room; book vouchers, Wilson Room; loan checks, Banquet Room; and financial aid, Ross Room. Student IDs may be obtained at the Charles D. Dunn Recreation Center, and university police will offer vehicle decals at the police office at 12th and Henderson streets. Auditions for the Royal Players

BENTON — Auditions for the Royal Players’ production of Steel Magnolias will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the theater, 111 S. Market in downtown Benton. Saline Crossing Meeting

BENTON — The Saline Crossing Regional Park and Recreation Area Inc. will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Gene Moss building of Tyndall Park. The public is invited and urged to help plan for the 200th anniversary of the first settlement in Saline County.

Storm-disposal sites open

HOT SPRINGS — The city’s compost facility on Davidson Drive and the Cedar Glades Landfill, 1040 Cedar Glades Road, are available to residents who need to dispose of debris from the recent storm. Only natural vegetation will be accepted free of charge during regular hours of operation at both sites. There will be a charge for construction debris brought to the Cedar Glades Landfill facility. Customers are advised to call one of three numbers before visiting the compost facility: the Compost Hotline at (501) 321-6869, which offers updated, recorded information about the composting operation; the Compost Shed at (501) 802-1756; or the Water Treatment Plant at (501) 262-1125.

Treasures Exhibit

ARKADELPHIA — The treasures portion of the Trees and Treasures exhibit at the Arkadelphia Arts Center, 625 Main St., will remain on display through Jan. 19. A large variety of vintage treasures includes a collection of musical instruments from around the world, old sewing machines, doilies, pedal tractors, rocking chairs from the 1800s and more. HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Property Owners’ Association is accepting applications for property owners willing to serve on the POA’s standing committees in 2013. There are also two POA Board of Directors positions open. HOT SPRINGS — The 47th annual Coin, Stamp and Sports Card Show will be held from 1-6 p.m. Jan. 18 and 19; and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Hot Springs Convention Center. Vendors from throughout the country will buy and sell U.S. and foreign coins, medals, stamps, sports cards and more. Admission and parking for the event are free. Martin Luther King Celebrations

BENTON — The 2013 Benton Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebrations will be held Jan. 18-21. Festivities will begin at 7 a.m. Jan. 18 with a prayer breakfast at the Benton First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and will continue with a Community Unity Celebration at 5 p.m. Jan. 19 at First United Methodist Church. At 4 p.m. Jan. 20, Elect Temple Church will hold a memorial service with Stop the Violence founder the Rev. Benny Johnson of Little Rock as the guest speaker. On Jan. 21, the MLK Day of Service will begin at 9 a.m., and a parade will be held at 4 p.m. There is also a Martin Luther King essay contest under way in the Benton School District. Volunteer Opportunity

BENTON — The Saline County Library has joined the World Book Night 2013 campaign as an organization partner and will serve as a host site for the April 23 nationwide book giveaway. HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Property Owners’ Association is soliciting applications from property owners in good standing who are willing to serve on the 2013 Election Day Committee, which oversees the ballot counting for the Hot Springs Village Board of Directors election. Mardi Gras Party

HOT SPRINGS — The Hot Springs Jazz Society “Krewe” will produce its first Mardi Gras Party Dance to the Beat on Orange Street from 6-10 p.m. Feb. 9 in the old Hot Springs High School Field House on Orange Street. Entertainment will be by the Spa City Stompers, Sweet Mother and Zydeco Stingrays. There will be a costume contest with prizes valued at up to $500, food and a raffle. Limited reserved tables of eight on the dance floor are available for $500 per table. General admission is $20 or $10 for Jazz Society members.
