— Authorities said Friday morning that a burglary suspect had been shot by a Little Rock police dectective.

Sgt. Cassandra Davis said officers responded to burglary in progress about 9:40 a.m. at 4521 W. 16th St. and noticed one man loading items from the duplex into a gray Toyota Camry, driven by a second person. Both suspects fled the scene in the vehicle, and officers pursued them.

The suspects stopped in an alley near South Brown Street, where the chase continued on foot. One suspect appeared to surrender before he purportedly charged one of the officers, Davis said. The officers, who Davis declined to identify, said a struggle ensued. The second officer shot the suspect after it appeared he was attempting to take hold of the first officer's firearm.

The second individual was later arrested without incident.

The deceased suspect was identified as Michael W. Daniel, 25, of 1504 S. Pine St. The second suspect, identified as Marcus Davis, 26, of 4115 S. Malloy St. has been charged with capital murder, theft, fleeing and burglary.

Davis said the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid leave. One of the officers received minor injuries in the incident.

death penalty for robbery seems a bit harsh, but maybe robber was armed and aimed gun at cop? Either way - guessing this will stop robberies in that neighborhood...

Does my heart good. At least there will be no money wasted on him in court or jail or whatever. You have to weigh the risk when you do the crime.

He had choices that day. When you put yourself in a bad situation doing the wrong things, bad things can happen to you. Other wise we will just open the doors and let em come on in take and do what they want! Choices, choices, choices.

A great day for the hard working L.R. Police Department. Another Skunk off the streets and no money spent holding, coddling, clothing, feeding, doing his laundry, paying for his heat bill and no Lawyer bill - and all for less than a quarter. AND he will not be back to scare good people.

I am quite surprised at how many people are so hard hearted towards another human being and gladly wishing death on him. Whatever choices the burgaler made did result in his demise, but what if that was your son, husband, brother, or father? Would you be so quick to be so hateful? Or would you appreciate people being so callous towards him? You have no idea what life was like for that person or what caused him to become what he was. What pains me is how negative and mean people are towards each other. Where is the love and compassion for another human or his family? A hateful attitude and ill feelings towards another person is as bad as not having any respect for another person and his/her belongings.

southrnbelle, all the negativity probably comes as the result of our failed justice system. Honest, hardworking taxpayers are tired of the leniency shown in our courts. If this man had been caught, he would have likely been back on the streets in a few weeks or months preying on someone else.

Apparently Southernbelle, your home has never been burglarized. If you had, you would know the violated feeling it is. There is never a reason to burglarize, never a reason to steal whats not yours. Crime is rampant because this nation has went overboard on making sure these criminals rights are not violated, to the point, that the victum's rights are never taken into question. This criminal must have had a weapon for an officer to use deadly force. Live by the Sword, die by the Sword. He got what he deserved.

Maybe we all are being too harsh and judgemental. Maybe this poor fellow was just trying to raise enough cash to pay his tuition at a community college and ultimately go on to become a titan of business. Maybe he might have gone on to solve the world's problems. Maybe.....but very unlikely. I agree with all of the other mean-spirited, hateful comments already posted. All of my kids were raised to know right from wrong, and are all working to earn a living and pay their bills. That's how life is supposed to be lived.

Packman says... January 11, 2013 at 3:30 p.m.

Hey Southrnbelle - "Whatever choices the burgaler made did result in his demise, but what if that was your son, husband, brother, or father?" If it were my son, husband, or brother I would be saddened at his passing but understand he did wrong. "Would you be so quick to be so hateful?" No, but only due to irrational emotional ties. "Or would you appreciate people being so callous towards him?" No. But they are just being honest. "You have no idea what life was like for that person or what caused him to become what he was." That's correct, and has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact he got what he deserved. "What pains me is how negative and mean people are towards each other." What pains me are people so willing to make excuses for criminal behavior instead of holding the individual perp ultimately accountability. "Where is the love and compassion for another human or his family?" It exists for those who deserve it. "A hateful attitude and ill feelings towards another person is as bad as not having any respect for another person and his/her belongings." And your point would be????

The really sad thing is that the 1418 Brown St. neighborhood is made up mainly of people that work very very hard for what they have or older people. If the residents had been home, whose to say that they wouldn't have been harmed ? It's a harsh world and this time GOOD PREVAILED !

NutButter says... January 11, 2013 at 4:42 p.m.

Southrnbelle, I have no criminals in my family. Until a person will "man up" and be responsible for his choices, he may have to face harsh reality. It is a crying shame that he died burglarizing a home. He made a choice. Maybe someday someone will stop making excuses for his choice that day. If you want to call him a victim, that's your choice. Behavior will not change as long as excuses are made for thugs who choose to lead the life of a criminal. We all make choices everyday. Pure and simple: he made a very poor choice that day, and hopefully, someone will learn something from his poor choice of a life of crime.

Southernbelle, I make no excuses for the criminal and believe he sealed his own fate, but I still agree with you that the manic glee shown by some on here is sickening. These are probably some of the same people who worship guns and can't get enough of them. A frightening thought.

You hit the nail on the head with your comments Belle, but others fail to see the hatred in their comments. I bet they will be telling their preacher and other folks about how glad they are that this human being, regardless of the bad choice he made, is dead at church this weekend..... I'll just pray for him and them.

If putting the officer on leave for emotional reasons is the case and the policy, then fine. If it is because the "hate" groups are going to question the shooting, then this sends the wrong message. LR has a severe crime issue. The police and the city need to be careful in their actions and speech after these events. We have seen enough of these situations where people and police are threatened, the victims caught or shot, then the so-called "hate" groups come to the defense of the perp and cause problems for the police.

can`t have it both ways inquire, either your glad this thug got what he deserved before he did it to someone else or not.there is no grey area,if there was a grey area he would spend 30 days in lockup with free meals just to be released and hit the streets.

Being glad he was caught and is off the street is NOT the same as uncouth glee that he is dead. I in no way condone what he did, but I still regret a wasted life and a violent death. I believe God grieves when anyone wastes their life in this way and dies without learning to live well. Who are we to gloat and crow?

if they had of arrested him then he would be back on the streets in no time after we feed and housed him.if he provoked the officer and he shot just leaving him wounded he would have sued lrpd.it was the lifes choices he made and they did not turn out so good but maybe his getting shot will open the eyes of some other thugs and they can turn thier lives around.
i hate that he lost his life trying to steal something that probably had little value but stealing is stealing.
