One mistaken compliment creates an art collector

When a dinner guest complimented Bobby Tucker on the Carroll Cloar painting hanging on his wall, it started him on a quest— a quest to acquire the actual painting. The one on his wall, you see, was a print — a good one given to his aunt by the artist himself, but still a print. Not the real deal.

Eventually Tucker did acquire The Red Haw Tree, and an art collector was born.

When asked what advice he would give new collectors he says: “Rule number one: Buy what you like.”

See Saturday’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette HomeStyle section for his and other art collectors recommendations for novices who want to build their own collections of original art.
