LITTLE ROCK — Heavy rain is expected around the state today, the National Weather Service in Little Rock said.
Meteorologist John Robinson said Saturday that flash flood watches are in effect throughout most of Arkansas. The northwest and southwest areas of Arkansas are not under flash flood watches.
Some severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon into the late evening hours, southeast of a line from De Queen to Clinton to Pocahontas, said the weather service.
Robinson said damaging winds will be the greatest threat, but said an isolated tornado or two could not be ruled out even though severe weather is not likely to be widespread.
Residents northwest of the line from Mena to Mountain Home should expect 1/2 to 1-inch of rain. Robinson said other areas of the state should expect 1 to 3-inches of rain, while 4 to 5-inches in some areas are possible.
A cold front moving through the state will bring colder temperatures and a chance for winter weather.
Robinson said winter weather advisories have been issued for Benton, Washington, Carroll and Madison counties.
Robinson said light freezing rain or sleet could occur in parts of north central Arkansas late this evening. Snow could mix in parts of northwest and north central Arkansas.
A light wintry mix is possible in northern Arkansas through Sunday morning.
