End of the year, at last

Crowd at rescheduled party welcomes 2013 at Theressa Hoover UMC

— The sanctuary of Theressa Hoover United Methodist Church was converted to a party wonderland featuring food, games, karaoke singing and even a bit of line dancing at a Jan. 4 End of the Year (2012, that is) Celebration.

Rescheduled from Dec.

28 due to inclement weather, the party was sponsored by Better Community Development’s Play Safe! program; InnerCity FutureNet; Hoover UMCChildren’s Church; and the church’s AD4C (Armed and Dangerous for Christ) Youth Ministry and Singles Ministry.

Sandra Mitchell, director of supportive services for Better Community Development, welcomed the crowd and introduced special guests.

LaShanna Bruce served as mistress of ceremonies for the event. Guests included families, participants in the sponsoring programs,and participants from other Better Community Development programs.

Additional remarks were made by the Rev. Malik Saafir, senior pastor of Hoover, and Deborah Bell, community developmentdirector for Better Community Development.

Guests enjoyed a meal of tacos and taco salads, pizza, chicken and assorted sweets including cookies, mini-cupcakes and a candy “village.” Door prizes andcontest prizes were given.

Originally founded as Black Community Developers, an outreach program of Hoover UMC, Better Community Development is a multifaceted agency servingthe disadvantaged of Little Rock’s 12th Street Corridor.

Play Safe! is a communitybased HIV/STD intervention program for black youth ages 12-17.
