— EMERALD PARK SWITCHBACKS

Location: Begin at the boat launch parking lot near Burns Park Golf Course.

Cross Shilcotts Bayou on the pedestrian bridge.

Trail marker is on the left.

Length: It’s a steep 1.2-mile trek up seven unpaved, hairpin turns to the asphalt trail at the top of the cliff.

Note: It’s a lot easier going down.

Main attractions: A good quadriceps workout is rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Arkansas River.

Hazards: The “dangerous cliffs” signs are not kidding. Seriously. You will die.

Amenities:Parking.

Dog, bike, tyke friendly? Dogs will love it, but your uphill bike legs had better be ready.

Little kids are better off on the nearby (and flat) River Trail.

Rating (out of five):

Next time: The new Highland Trail/Emerald Park Trail.
