Arkansas teen killed in truck, train collision

A teen was killed Friday evening and two others were injured when their vehicle collided with a train on a Jackson County road.

18-year-old William Brown, of Newport, was killed in the accident.

Arkansas State Police said the accident occurred when a 2002 Chevy Avalanche, driven by 16-year-old Cody Gates, turned east on County Road 1130 and collided with a train.

Police said Gates and Donnie Stapleton, 14, were injured in the accident.

The police report states none of the occupants were wearing a seat belt. Police said the weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the accident.

The injured were taken to Harris Hospital in Newport and Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, but the report does not specify which victim went to each hospital.

According to preliminary figures, Brown's death was the 22nd fatality in a traffic accident in Arkansas this year.
