MEMPHIS — The National Civil Rights Museum is inviting visitors to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, even though the facility is undergoing renovations.
A number of events in honor of the slain civil-rights leader are set for Monday at the museum, located at the site of the old Lorraine Motel.
King was standing on the motel balcony when he was shot and killed on April 4, 1968.
Among the scheduled events are a food drive, a blood donation drive and a tour of the new “Freedom Sisters” exhibit, which spotlights 20 black women and their impact on the civil-rights movement.
There will also be dramatic and musical performances, as well as children’s arts and crafts.
Visitors, however, won’t get to access many parts of the museum because much of it is closed for renovations.
